Giyu Tomioka: The Most Misunderstood Hashira

The current Water Hashira Giyu Tomioka is literally the ONLY reason Demon Slayer has this many seasons and the new upcoming movie Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle! Think about it – if he didn’t hesitate and just finished his job in that very first episode, we wouldn’t have ANY of this incredible story continuing!
When the Hashira are discussing the new training, Giyu drops this bomb: “I’m not like you guys” and just walks away. What really struck me at first was that I thought he was being totally condescending to the other Hashira, but then you realize he literally couldn’t speak his mind because he’s such an introverted person! From my experience watching the series, we later discover that Giyu Tomioka genuinely feels like he doesn’t belong with the other Hashira and has always carried this crushing depression. I mean within the entire Demon Slayer Corps.
But dude, in the new Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle movie, we’re finally getting to see Giyu Tomioka and Tanjiro battling Upper Three Akaza together!
Here’s what absolutely destroys me though Giyu Tomioka’s backstory is even more heartbreaking than I ever expected. In his childhood, his sister literally sacrificed her life to protect him, and then Sabito did the exact same thing during the Final Selection. No wonder this made him such a quiet, withdrawn person!
What hits me hardest is when I rewatch the complete series and go back to Episode 1 – Giyu is the one motivating Tanjiro to fight for the people he wants to protect and never let anyone defeat him. But after watching the latest Hashira Training Arc, I personally realized something incredible that gave me chills – it feels like Giyu Tomioka was actually talking to himself that whole time, giving himself the advice he desperately needed to hear! That moment completely changed how I view his entire character arc.
