I’ve Had Itachi as My Profile Picture for Years – Here’s Why I Finally Had to Admit He’s Overrated

As a long time anime fan, I’ve always been completely fascinated by those complex characters that absolutely divide the community and spark endless debates in forums and comment sections, and today I want to share my brutally honest thoughts about one of Naruto’s most controversial figures. Itachi Uchiha and this might not be what you expect from someone who literally keeps Itachi as their profile picture across all their social media because I’m about to challenge everything we think we know about this so-called genius.

Deep Diving into Itachi’s Mind Through the Light Novels

Look, I’ve been an Itachi fan for SO long that it’s embarrassing. we’re talking years of defending him in YouTube comment wars but when I finally got my hands on those two incredible books Itachi’s Story [Daylight and Midnight], I was not prepared for what I was going to discover about this character I thought I knew inside and out. What really struck me while reading these novels is how they show us that he genuinely didn’t want to fight anyone and deep down he’s actually this incredibly kind soul who got completely crushed under the weight of his family expectations. I’m talking about his father and the entire clan’s pressure that was so intense it forced Itachi to suppress every single one of his true feelings until he became this emotionally distant shell of himself, and honestly, reading those scenes made me question everything I believed about his character.

The Father-Son Confrontation That Never Happened

But here’s what absolutely frustrates me to my core and kept me up at night after finishing those books. I really, REALLY wanted him to properly confront his father about all this insanity, to have that explosive moment where he finally stands up and says “this is wrong and I won’t do it,” but instead he only confronted him in the most twisted way possible when he was literally about to massacre the entire clan. I couldn’t believe how the story just glossed over this massive missed opportunity, and I still cannot wrap my head around why his father would actually allow his own son to commit such an unbelievably heinous act when he could have stopped it, because Itachi didn’t even give his people a single chance to find another solution and just acted like he automatically knows what’s best for everyone without considering that maybe, just maybe, there could have been another way that didn’t involve genocide.

The Akatsuki Connection and Fan Forgiveness

I totally get that the Akatsuki is this incredibly violent gang where literally every single member has some kind of deeply disturbing and weird personality that makes them fascinating to watch, but what drives me absolutely crazy when I’m scrolling through anime discussions is how people are way, WAY too forgiving when it comes to Itachi just because he had “good intentions” or whatever. The thing that hit me hardest is the hypocrisy here – I’m literally a huge fan of Itachi myself, I love his incredible fighting style with all those mind-bending jutsu that make me rewind scenes just to catch every detail, and his philosophical quotes that give me chills every single time, I even proudly keep Itachi as my profile picture for all my social media accounts – but personally I feel like he’s honestly not that special when you really break it down because at the end of the day he’s just a tremendously talented but fundamentally misguided person who made terrible choices, and I wish more fans would admit this instead of treating him like some untouchable saint.

Final Thoughts

While Itachi absolutely remains this intriguing character with incredible abilities that blow my mind every time I rewatch his fights and those memorable quotes that stick with you forever, I genuinely believe we need to look beyond all the hype and fan worship to see him for what he truly is – a ridiculously talented but fundamentally misguided individual who made choices that honestly can’t be easily forgiven regardless of his intentions. What keeps bothering me long after every rewatch is that good intentions don’t erase the devastation he caused to so many people’s lives, and maybe it’s time we stop giving him a pass just because his story is tragic.

Yo, Watashi no Namae wa Vamshi Chandar! Watching anime and reading manga has been my favorite thing to do since I was 11 years old. I've watched 5000+ anime episodes and read more than 2000 manga chapters. I prefer ISEKAI and Shounen mostly, but I do watch Seinen and Shoujo as well.
