I Started Thinking About Time Travel in Dragon Ball and Now I Can’t Unsee Future Trunks as the True Main Character

The Time Travel That Changed Everything

Listen, according to Future Trunks’ original timeline, Goku and his friends were supposed to die during the Cell Saga, but instead Future Trunks travels back in time and completely changes everything by saving Goku from that deadly heart virus with the cure and then defeating the androids and Cell alongside his new friends, which is absolutely mind-blowing when you think about how one person’s decision to travel through time literally rewrote the entire fate of the universe and everyone we love in it, and what really struck me about this whole situation is how we never really think about the consequences of changing the past until we see it play out like this.

But this created an alternate timeline, right, and I mean EVERYTHING from the exact moment Future Trunks arrives in this timeline isn’t supposed to happen according to the original flow of events, so then who’s REALLY the main character of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super because if you think about it logically, it’s Future Trunks and his master Gohan who are the ones driving the entire narrative forward and making all these crucial decisions that affect literally every other character’s destiny, and I personally think this theory makes so much more sense than just accepting Goku as the protagonist when he’s basically living in a timeline that shouldn’t even exist!

Even the Gods Are Worried About Timeline Changes

What makes this even more incredible is that Whis also explained that things are happening that aren’t supposed to happen in the natural order of the universe, and even the God of Destruction Beerus himself is genuinely scared of these time-altering events that Future Trunks set in motion, which is absolutely insane because we’re talking about a god who can literally erase planets without breaking a sweat, yet he’s so concerned about timeline disruptions that he warned he would erase Earth completely if any more new time traveling happens, and what really got me was seeing Beerus actually worried about something because from my experience watching Dragon Ball Super, this guy is usually so calm and collected about everything!

The Pain and Trauma Future Trunks Endured

The sheer amount of pain and suffering that Future Trunks has endured throughout his life is so heartbreaking and devastating that it makes you wonder how anyone could survive that level of trauma, and like that wasn’t already enough torture for one person to handle, Zamasu appears with the stolen body of Goku and brings out his twisted version of “divine justice” by obliterating all of humanity while forcing Trunks to watch helplessly as his mother dies and nearly the entire population of Earth gets completely destroyed in the most brutal way possible, and honestly, watching these scenes made me genuinely emotional because I couldn’t believe how much one character was being put through.

Just imagine for a second the absolutely ruined cities everywhere you look, all those once-beautiful landscapes now completely destroyed and lifeless, and for a moment I genuinely felt like what’s even the purpose of trying to save that timeline when everything was so utterly and completely destroyed that there was barely anything left worth saving, and even Bulma from the present timeline felt absolute horror and shock watching those devastating scenes when she arrived in Future Trunks’ apocalyptic time and saw the true extent of the destruction with her own eyes, and this reminded me of how powerful Dragon Ball can be when it shows real consequences instead of just power-ups and battles.

That Heartbreaking Moment When Trunks Attacked Goku

I don’t know the exact episode number, but I think it was around episode 49 where Future Trunks immediately attacks Goku the instant he sees him, even though deep down he knows that this Goku came to help his old friends and isn’t the enemy, and this single moment perfectly captures and helps us understand just how incredibly traumatic and psychologically damaging fighting Goku Black was for Future Trunks because he’s so broken and triggered by seeing Goku’s face that his first instinct is pure violence and self-defense, and the thing that hit me hardest about this scene was realizing that this is what PTSD looks like in anime form – it’s not just dramatic, it’s genuinely heartbreaking to watch.

The Mystery of Goku Black That Drove Everyone Crazy

Oh my god, the exact moment we saw that first glimpse of Goku Black on screen, literally everyone including me went absolutely CRAZY trying to figure out “who the hell is this mysterious person inside Goku’s body?!” and it was so wild because everyone was frantically theorizing that Zamasu had somehow made a perfect clone of Son Goku, but I was sitting there thinking this had to be Goten because we’d completely forgotten about him as a character and he looks exactly like Goku when he’s older, so it could totally be him, and I genuinely felt like I had just deciphered the identity of this mystery man and solved the whole puzzle, but then nobody else figured out the true mystery behind Goku Black’s origins and it’s actually hilarious how not a single person assumed that this could be Goku himself who had somehow gone completely evil, which just goes to show how amazing and pure of a character Son Goku truly is that the idea of him being evil was literally unthinkable to everyone, and from my experience watching anime theories online, I’ve never seen a mystery that got the community this divided and excited at the same time!

Yo, Watashi no Namae wa Vamshi Chandar! Watching anime and reading manga has been my favorite thing to do since I was 11 years old. I've watched 5000+ anime episodes and read more than 2000 manga chapters. I prefer ISEKAI and Shounen mostly, but I do watch Seinen and Shoujo as well.
