Blue Lock isn’t just a sports anime it’s more than that and I’m telling you right now it absolutely awakens your competitive spirit in ways I never thought possible, like seriously this anime hit me completely different from any other sports series I’ve watched! What really got me was how it literally changed my entire perspective on competition and winning, something I never expected from what I initially thought was just another soccer show.
When I first started watching this anime it felt like any other sports anime nothing more and I honestly thought this would never make it into my favorite sports anime list because my number one sports anime has always been Haikyuu and Kuroko no Basket, so I actually dropped Blue Lock around episodes 19-20 thinking it was just another generic soccer show. But my friend kept insisting I finish Blue Lock because the manga he’d been reading had gotten so incredibly good and he kept urging me to catch up on the anime at least, and when Blue Lock season 2 started airing this year it received very bad reviews where most reviewers only pointed out the animation issues but literally no one questioned the story itself, so I picked up this anime again and oh my god I was absolutely blown away by every single episode like I couldn’t stop watching! From my experience watching anime for years, I can honestly say this completely blindsided me in the best way possible.
Learning to Compete and Win (Something I Never Knew I Needed)
Am I a guy with no competitive spirit? I mean I never competed with anyone in real life but watching Blue Lock completely opened my eyes and helped me understand why you should compete and how to actually win when everything seems hopeless. What struck me most was how the obsession became absolutely contagious and I found myself completely locked in watching Isagi struggling and fighting when he’s up against opponents who are literally ten times better than him, and somehow this made me realize I needed that same fire in my own life! I personally think this is what separates Blue Lock from every other sports anime I’ve ever seen it doesn’t just show you competition, it makes you FEEL that burning need to compete and improve yourself.
Isagi’s Powerlessness Resonated With My Soul
In season 2 that final episode made me get so completely lost in the series that I genuinely felt like I was watching a real match happening right in front of me, not some animated show. The internal monologue of Isagi Yoichi where he’s thinking “I’m not good enough, what have I even done in this match, among all of these absolute geniuses I didn’t even score one single goal” and then he starts simulating the entire match in his head and somehow awakens this incredible new technique. I know all of this might feel kind of exaggerated to some people but this is exactly why it feels so REAL compared to everything else! This reminded me of every single time I’ve felt completely outclassed and powerless in my own life, and watching Isagi work through those exact same feelings hit me on such a personal level that I actually got emotional during that episode.
This Destroys Every Other Sports Anime (And I Have Receipts)
This isn’t like the completely fake overhyping we’ve seen in Kuroko no Basket where everything feels so unrealistic. Blue Lock is pure real sports with no fanservice, no unnecessary drama, nothing but raw intense soccer that makes your heart race! I’ve felt exactly what Isagi feels when he’s facing a skilled player and that overwhelming urge to just give up completely, but whereas I would totally give in and accept defeat, Isagi uses that exact same crushing emotion to somehow awaken himself and become stronger. This felt like a divine revelation for me because everyone feels that powerlessness when facing someone better, but we absolutely have to conquer that fear and push forward no matter what! What really got me was realizing that I’ve been giving up too easily my entire life, while Isagi shows you can use that feeling of inadequacy as fuel instead of letting it destroy you.
From my experience watching both series multiple times, I personally think Blue Lock is infinitely better than Kuroko no Basket because everything felt real and grounded, especially during that finale match that had me literally on the edge of my seat gripping my chair! This anime resonated with me so deeply through Isagi Yoichi’s feelings of complete powerlessness and inadequacy. I got so emotionally connected to this series in ways I never imagined a sports anime could possibly do to me, and now I honestly can’t stop thinking about it and I keep rewatching episodes just to feel that rush again!
